North Korea’s newest missile may be able to reach the U.S. state of Alaska, the U.K. Daily Mail reported.

The missile, called the Hwasong-14, was successfully test-fired Tuesday. According to CNN, the missile flew only 578 miles into the Sea of Japan during its first test, and experts said it could have a range of over 4,000 miles — putting Alaska within North Korea’s reach.

“The success in the test-fire of intercontinental ballistic rocket Hwasong-14 is a manifestation of the invincible might of Juche Korea and tremendous capability of its self-reliant national defence industry that has been rapidly strengthened,” Ri Un Chon, North Korea’s vice-minister of Metallurgical Industry, said in an interview with the state-run Korea Central News Agency. “It is also a great historical victory in putting an end to the persistent nuclear war threat posed by the U.S. against the DPRK.

“The news about the successful test-fire greatly encourages the army and people in the country who are rushing ahead like a whirlwind toward the Conference of Mallima Frontrunners,” the story continued, referencing an official party conference at the end of the year. “I am much gratified with just imagining the wretched appearance of the U.S. shocked by the test-fire.”

In a blog post for the Union of Concerned Scientists, David Wright noted that “if the reports are correct, that same missile could reach a maximum range of roughly 6,700 km (4,160 miles) on a standard trajectory.

“That range would not be enough to reach the lower 48 states or the large islands of Hawaii, but would allow it to reach all of Alaska.”

In a Twitter statement, the president called for China to step up pressure on the North Koreans to stop testing missiles.

“North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy have anything better to do with his life?” the president said.

“Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!”

Fox News reported that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also said the United States would “never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea” and called for all nations to enforce sanctions on the North Koreans, saying that “global action is required to stop a global threat”.

Pentagon spokesman Dana White also said that “we remain prepared to defend ourselves and our allies and to use the full range of capabilities at our disposal against the growing threat from North Korea” in a statement condemning the launch.

It’s become clear that North Korea leaders needs to be dealt with harshly for their insane warmongering. It’s beyond belief that they’re able to test missiles and continue their nuclear program in complete contravention of international law.

It isn’t just the Trump administration that needs to take action against the North Koreans. All countries — especially China — need to step up the pressure and end this once and for all.
