President Donald Trump had good news for the media after his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday: He indicated there had been some progress in the sometimes rocky U.S.-China relationship.

Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he hosted Xi, that the two men had developed a relationship and he looked forward to it.

“I think truly progress has been made. We’ll be making a lot of additional progress,” Trump said Friday, according to the White House. “I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away.”

Thursday night, Trump joked with reporters that he had “gotten nothing” from the Chinese president.

“We had a long discussion already. So far, I have gotten nothing, absolutely nothing,” he told reporters, according to The Hill. “But we have developed a friendship. I can see that. I think, long-term, we are going to have a very, very great relationship and I look very much forward to it.”

Before Xi arrived, Trump had indicated the meeting would be difficult because the U.S. can no longer afford trade deficits and job losses.

The two presidents reportedly discussed key issues that included trade and the threat posed by North Korea.

Beijing also expressed hope that the meeting would move U.S.-China relations toward a “new starting point,” the Xinhua Net News Agency reported.

Areas of concern that Xi reportedly intended to stress in the meeting included the economy, law enforcement and cybersecurity, diplomacy and security, and people-to-people exchanges.

Xi also reportedly told Trump that there were “a thousand reasons to make the China-U.S. relationship work, and no reasons to break it.”

In addition, the Chinese president also said the two countries should work to handle sensitive issues and manage differences in a constructive manner, and strengthen communication and coordination in major international and regional affairs.

This is the kind of meeting the two countries needed to have and with any hope, it will lead to better relations.
