Billboard mocks Melania’s English, here’s how she responded

First lady Melania Trump threatened to sue a private school over its billboard that appeared to mock her English language skills.

What did the billboard say?

The billboard had a large image of the first lady with the words, “just imagine how far you can go with a little bit of English,” implying that she did not have much ability to speak English.

The billboard appeared in Croatia, a country bordering the first lady’s country of origin, Slovenia.

Did they intend to insult the first lady?

It appears not. A representative for the private English language school in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, said it was misunderstood as an insult.

“We are very sorry that the billboards were misunderstood as something intended to mock the U.S. first lady,” said Ivis Buric. “It was meant to be something positive, to show her as a role model.”

They have agreed to take the billboards down after the first lady objected.

Will the first lady follow through with her threat?

It appears there’s a chance she might do that. In a statement to the Associated Press, a lawyer for the first lady said they were looking at their options for legal action.

“I’m satisfied with the fact that the school admitted that they violated the law and that they are ready to remove the billboards and (Facebook) ads,” lawyer Natasa Pirc-Musar said. “We are still analyzing possible further legal steps.”

Why does this story matter?

It doesn’t, really. Perhaps insofar as an insult to the first lady of the United States can be taken as a slight to the prestige and reputation of our entire nation, but really, if it was an accident on the part of the billboard designers, who cares? This is the kind of story people love to read in order to escape the drudgery of the real news, but let’s not neglect the more important issues that face this country and our fellow Americans.
