Melania Trump Wins Humanitarian Award for Her Dedication to Women and Children

First lady Melania Trump has been honored by the Kuwait-American Foundation for her work to help children, the first lady announced Friday.

“Thank you to Kuwait-America Foundation for this year’s Humanitarian Award!” she tweeted.

“My goal as FLOTUS is to positively impact the lives of children & effect change within our next generation,” Trump added.

The first lady, accompanied by President Donald Trump, received the award Thursday at the Kuwait embassy in Washington, D.C.

Sheiha Rima Al-Sabah, wife of Kuwait Ambassador Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah, said the first lady has brought a personal perspective to helping those with the greatest needs.

Melania Trump is committed to “being a powerful force for good, not just in the United States, but everywhere,” she said, according to the Kuwait News Agency.

“Because of her own path, she understands better than most what it is like to leave home behind. She knows what it takes to learn a new language, a new culture — to call a new land home. And she brings this understanding to the important work she does, day in and day out,” she added.

Melania Trump said the measure of a society’s humanity “must be judged by how it treats the weakest and most vulnerable among them and quite often it is the children who are unable to defend themselves when under attack, speak up when abused or find aid when most needed.”

She also noted that children need the help of adults to survive.

“Let us join together now to become their voice so they can be heard, to become their shield so they can find protection and to become their safe haven so they may find hope in the future,” she said.

A statement released by Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s communications director, said Trump was “honored by the recognition, but more importantly considers this as an opportunity to continue to shine a light on the fact that it is often children who bear the harshest burdens of cruelty and injustice,” as reported by CNN.

During the evening, President Donald Trump talked of meeting Kuwait’s leader, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, saying “he met a man who is really helping us, really very strongly helping us in the Middle East.”

There are “a lot of things happening in the Middle East,” the president said. “We’ve all come together as a family very much. The world is actually coming together.”

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was also present at the event, praised the U.S.-Kuwait partnership.

“We welcome Kuwait’s recent commitments to several of Trump’s regional priorities,” he said, adding that Kuwait “responded to Trump’s historic call for action” to help defeat the radical Islamic State group.
